I was brushing crumbs off the counter, half-listening to a podcast, already thinking about the emails I hadn’t answered. My 6 year old son walked in, held out a wrinkled drawing, and said, “I made this for you at school today.” I glanced at it half annoyed and nodded, said: “Cool, buddy,” and kept wiping. He paused. Then he folded it in half threw the drawing on the table and walked away without saying a word.  

I stood there, sponge in hand, feeling like I’d just missed something I couldn’t get back. I turned off the podcast. Set the sponge down. And I sat on the floor, the drawing soft in my hands, my chest tight with a kind of quiet ache. I stared at the crooked stars and the stick figure with my name above it, trying to read it like it could take me back five minutes - like maybe if I looked hard enough, I could undo the way I brushed him off. That moment already passed and all I could do now was hold the paper like it meant everything. Because it did!  Minutes Matter.
